Germany Stresses Support for Ukraine’s EU Membership
Chancellor Scholz Rejects Claims That Ukraine Is to Blame
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of keeping the path open for Ukraine to join the European Union and dismissed suggestions that Ukraine was responsible for Russia’s invasion.
In a radio interview aired on Thursday, Scholz was asked whether he agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump’s view, which aligns with Russian President Vladimir Putin, that Ukraine was to blame for the war. He firmly responded, “It is not. We in Europe insist on this.”
EU Keeps the Door Open for Ukraine
Scholz reaffirmed the EU’s stance on Ukraine’s prospective membership, stating that Ukraine must have the right to choose its own democratic and sovereign path. He stressed that the country must not be hindered in its aspirations to integrate with Europe.
Ukraine’s Future Security Needs
Addressing the long-term security of Ukraine, Scholz highlighted the necessity of a strong Ukrainian military. He asserted that European and international allies, including transatlantic partners, share the responsibility of ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Concerns Over U.S. Policy on the War
Europe is currently searching for a response to shifting U.S. policies on the war. High-level talks between the U.S. and Russia have sidelined Ukraine and its European backers, raising fears that Washington could make concessions to Moscow to end the conflict. This uncertainty has intensified discussions about Europe’s role in supporting Ukraine independently of U.S. policies.
