French Prosecutors Investigate TotalEnergies Over Mozambique Attack
Investigation Opened into Manslaughter Allegations
French prosecutors have launched a judicial inquiry into TotalEnergies over accusations of involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist individuals in danger during the 2021 jihadist attack in Mozambique. This follows a complaint filed by survivors and families of victims, who claim the company did not adequately protect subcontractors during the assault.
TotalEnergies Denies Wrongdoing
TotalEnergies has rejected all accusations, stating that its Mozambique LNG teams provided emergency assistance and evacuated more than 2,500 individuals, including staff, contractors, and subcontractors, from the Afungi site.
The 2021 Attack on Palma
The attack in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province was carried out by Islamist insurgents, resulting in numerous casualties and large-scale displacement. The assailants targeted areas near gas infrastructure projects partly owned by TotalEnergies.
Judicial Process and Potential Court Case
The investigation will determine whether the company failed in its duty to ensure the safety of subcontractors and provide assistance to those in danger. If sufficient evidence is found, TotalEnergies could face legal proceedings.
U.S. Backs Mozambique LNG Project
Despite the controversy, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has approved nearly $5 billion in funding for TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project, signaling continued international support for the development.
