Carrefour Acquisition of Louis Delhaize’s French Business Approved
Regulatory Approval with Conditions
The French antitrust authority has approved Carrefour’s acquisition of the French operations of Belgian retailer Louis Delhaize. However, the approval comes with the condition that eight stores must be sold to competitors.
Planned Sale of Stores
Carrefour announced that it would begin discussions with potential buyers to sell the required stores, which include five hypermarkets and three supermarkets. The combined sales of these stores amount to slightly over 300 million euros. The company aims to complete the sales by the end of 2025.
Details of the Acquisition
With this acquisition, Carrefour gains control over the Cora and Match store brands in France, along with the Provera purchasing unit. The company has set a target to generate synergies of 130 million euros by 2027 as a result of the transaction.
Strategic Expansion
This move strengthens Carrefour’s market position in France, enhancing its retail network and operational efficiencies. The requirement to divest some stores reflects regulatory efforts to maintain market competition.
