Zelenskiy Calls for a European Army Amid Changing US-Europe Relations
A Call for European Military Independence
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged the creation of a European army, arguing that the continent can no longer rely on the United States for protection. He stated that Europe would only gain respect from Washington if it had a strong and unified military.
No Backroom Deals on Ukraine’s War
Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine would not accept any peace agreement with Russia made without its involvement. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin may attempt to bring U.S. President Donald Trump to Moscow’s May 9 World War Two victory parade as a symbolic gesture rather than as a respected leader.
Shifting US-Europe Relations
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskiy reflected on U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s speech, which suggested a changing dynamic in U.S.-Europe relations. He acknowledged the possibility that America might refuse to support Europe on critical security matters.
“Many leaders have spoken about the need for a European military force. I believe the time has come to create the armed forces of Europe,” Zelenskiy stated. He argued that such a force, which would include Ukraine, would ensure that Europe’s security decisions remain in European hands.
Europe Must Speak with One Voice
Zelenskiy stressed that Europe needs unity to maintain its alliance with the U.S. He suggested that while America values Europe as a market, its commitment as an ally is uncertain. To strengthen transatlantic ties, he called for Europe to present a unified front.
US Expectations and Commitments
The current U.S. administration has indicated that Europe should take primary responsibility for its defense, focusing instead on issues such as border security and countering China. Despite this, the U.S. remains committed to NATO.
Zelenskiy insisted that a strong European military would not only bolster security but also create jobs, drive technological advancements, and benefit the economy. “This isn’t just about stockpiling weapons. It’s about technological leadership and economic growth for Europe,” he said.
Concerns Over Trump-Putin Relations
Zelenskiy expressed concern over Trump’s recent direct communication with Putin without consulting European allies. He warned that it would be dangerous for Trump to meet Putin before first discussing the matter with Ukraine and European partners.
Ukraine seeks to work closely with the U.S. and Europe to establish a joint strategy before any negotiations take place. Some European allies worry that concessions may be made to Russia at Ukraine’s expense before talks even begin.
A Warning to Europe
Zelenskiy cautioned European nations that they could be the next targets of Russian aggression. He referenced intelligence reports suggesting that Russia may deploy troops to Belarus, a close ally, in the near future.
“If this war ends the wrong way, Putin will have an excess of battle-hardened soldiers who know nothing but killing and looting,” he warned.
The Debate Over a European Army
While European countries cooperate militarily within NATO, previous calls for a unified European army have been met with resistance. Many governments see national defense as a matter of sovereignty.
However, Zelenskiy argued that a European military force would strengthen both security and economic stability, making Europe more self-sufficient and resilient against future threats.
