Winter Storm Paralyzes Central and Eastern U.S. with Snow and Ice
Widespread Weather Warnings
A severe winter storm brought snow, ice, and freezing temperatures to over 60 million people across more than a dozen states, from Kansas to New Jersey. Winter weather warnings and advisories remain in effect.
Heavy Snow and Ice Accumulations
- Snowfall: Areas from southern Ohio to Washington, D.C., are expected to receive 6–12 inches of snow.
- Ice Hazards: Freezing rain and sleet in northern Kentucky and southern West Virginia are creating dangerous ice accumulations.
Travel Disruptions
- Road Closures: Interstate 70 in Kansas and more than 50 miles of Interstate 29 in Missouri are shut down due to snow and ice.
- Stranded Drivers: Missouri state troopers have responded to nearly 600 stranded drivers and 285 crashes.
- Flight Cancellations: Hundreds of flights, including over 275 in Kansas City and St. Louis, have been canceled.
School and Office Closures
- Schools: Public schools in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Washington, and Philadelphia have preemptively announced closures.
- Federal Offices: Federal buildings in Washington, D.C., will remain closed.

Arctic Air to Follow
As the storm moves offshore on Monday night, arctic air is expected to follow, bringing temperatures 10–20°F below average across the Great Plains and East Coast on Monday and Tuesday.
