Trump Floats Rejoining WHO and Calls for Increased Saudi Investment in US
Possibility of Rejoining the WHO
President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday that the United States might reconsider its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), contingent on reforms within the global health agency. Speaking at a rally in Las Vegas, Trump stated, “Maybe we would consider doing it again, I don’t know. Maybe we would. They would have to clean it up.”
The U.S. had previously announced its withdrawal from the WHO, with the process set to conclude on January 22, 2026. Trump attributed the decision to the organization’s alleged mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health challenges.
Concerns Over Funding Disparity
Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the financial contributions to the WHO, pointing out that the U.S. bears a disproportionately large share of the funding compared to other nations, including China. The U.S. contributes approximately 18% of the WHO’s budget, which for the 2024-2025 cycle amounts to $6.8 billion. Trump emphasized, “We pay far more than countries with larger populations, like China.”
Proposed Saudi Investment in the US
In the same speech, Trump disclosed plans to request a significant increase in Saudi Arabia’s investment in the United States. He highlighted recent discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during which the kingdom pledged $600 billion for expanded investment and trade over the next four years. Trump added that he would push for the figure to reach $1 trillion.
Looking Ahead
Trump’s remarks reflect ongoing debates over the U.S. role in global health initiatives and international economic partnerships. Whether these proposals materialize remains uncertain, as they hinge on diplomatic negotiations and broader policy decisions.
