Trump and Putin Expected to Discuss Ukraine Ceasefire

Upcoming Talks Between Trump and Putin

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week regarding efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff described a recent meeting with Putin in Moscow as “positive” and anticipates a call between the two leaders soon.

“I expect that there will be a call with both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage and have conversations with the Ukrainians,” Witkoff stated. He expressed optimism that the discussion would be “really good and positive.”

Trump’s Ceasefire Proposal

Trump is seeking Putin’s support for a 30-day ceasefire plan that Ukraine accepted last week. Despite continued aerial strikes over the weekend and Russian advances in the Kursk region, Trump remains hopeful for a resolution. In a social media post, he said there is “a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end.”

Trump also urged Putin to spare the Ukrainian troops currently being pushed out of Kursk. In response, the Kremlin stated that Putin would honor this request if the Ukrainian forces surrendered. Additionally, Putin sent Trump a message via Witkoff expressing “cautious optimism” about reaching a deal.

Challenges in Negotiations

Despite optimism, obstacles remain. National security adviser Mike Waltz emphasized that significant hurdles must be overcome before Russia agrees to a ceasefire or a long-term peace deal. When asked if the U.S. would accept a resolution where Russia retains control of occupied eastern Ukraine, Waltz responded, “Are we going to drive every Russian off of every inch of Ukrainian soil?” He stressed the importance of “reality-based” negotiations.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, noting that a final peace agreement would require “hard work and concessions from both Russia and Ukraine.” He also pointed out that serious negotiations cannot begin “as long as they’re shooting at each other.”

Additional Measures to Encourage Peace

Trump has warned that failure to reach a ceasefire could escalate the conflict into a larger global war. In response, his administration has taken steps to encourage diplomatic progress. One key move was the reassignment of General Keith Kellogg’s role from special envoy for both Ukraine and Russia to solely focusing on Ukraine after Russian officials objected to his participation in peace talks.

Further, the expiration of a U.S. license permitting energy transactions with Russian financial institutions has added pressure on Putin to negotiate. The U.S. Treasury Department is also considering new sanctions on Russian oil companies and service providers as part of a broader strategy to push for a resolution.

While diplomatic efforts continue, significant challenges remain in securing a ceasefire and establishing a lasting peace agreement.
