Death Toll Rises to 26 as Fires Double in Size

South Korea is facing its most devastating wildfires on record, with at least 26 confirmed deaths. The fires, which began in Uiseong County, have doubled in size in just one day, consuming over 33,000 hectares (81,500 acres). This surpasses the previous record of 24,000 hectares burned in a 2000 wildfire.

Acting President Han Duck-soo has declared a national emergency, calling the situation critical due to the rapid spread of the fires. The South Korean military has stepped in, releasing aviation fuel to keep over 120 helicopters in operation. Firefighting efforts are focused on mountainous areas in the southeast, where the fires continue to rage.

Among the devastation, the 1,300-year-old Gounsa Buddhist temple in Uiseong has been incinerated. The fires are spreading rapidly eastward toward the coast, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions.

Although light rain is forecasted, experts warn that precipitation will be too minimal to provide significant relief. The Korea Forest Service has expressed concerns about the continued spread of the fires in the absence of substantial rainfall.
