Discovery of Drone Fragments
Romania has recovered fragments of an unmanned Russian aircraft near its border with Moldova. The drone was carrying active explosives, which the defense ministry detonated on site to prevent any danger to the local population.
Repeated Drone Incidents
As a European Union and NATO member, Romania has repeatedly experienced Russian drone fragments falling onto its territory over the past year. These incidents are linked to Moscow’s continued attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure. Moldova, which lies between Romania and Ukraine, has also reported similar drone fragments landing on its land.
Location of the Incident
The latest discovery occurred in the southeastern county of Galati, approximately 500 meters (547 yards) from the border with Moldova. The fragments were found near the Danube river port of Giurgiulesti. The defense ministry confirmed the presence of an active explosive load on board the drone and carried out a controlled detonation to eliminate any potential threat.
New Defense Measures
In response to these ongoing airspace violations, Romanian lawmakers recently passed legislation allowing the military to shoot down drones illegally breaching the country’s airspace. This decision was made based on threat levels and potential risks to human life and property. Prior to this law, Romania did not have an updated framework for addressing illegal airspace breaches in peacetime. Under the new regulation, shooting down drones or manned aircraft is considered a last resort measure.
