Pope Francis to be Discharged from Hospital, Requires Two Months of Rest
Hospitalization and Recovery
Pope Francis, 88, is set to be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday, March 23, 2025, after a 38-day stay due to severe pneumonia. Following his discharge, he will need two months of rest at the Vatican to fully recover.
Health Challenges During Hospitalization
During his hospital stay, the Pope faced serious health complications, including respiratory crises and early-stage kidney failure. He was placed on a ventilator and continues to receive oxygen therapy. The extended use of high-flow oxygen has affected his vocal cords, requiring speech rehabilitation.
First Public Appearance in Over Five Weeks
Despite these health challenges, Pope Francis plans to make his first public appearance since his hospitalization by offering a blessing from his hospital room window at Gemelli Hospital on Sunday. This continues his tradition of delivering the weekly noon-time prayer, which he has been unable to do since February 9.
Continued Leadership Amid Illness
Throughout his hospitalization, the Pope remained engaged with his duties. He continued appointing bishops, authorizing new saints, and overseeing Church reforms, demonstrating his ongoing leadership despite health setbacks.
