NHTSA Investigates Ford F-150 Trucks Over Unexpected Downshifts

Investigation Details

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks from model years 2015 to 2017.

This follows 138 consumer complaints about unexpected transmission downshifts while driving at highway speeds. The issue causes rapid deceleration and, in some cases, temporary rear-wheel lock-up or skidding.

Safety Concerns

Drivers reported losing control of their vehicles due to these sudden shifts. While no crashes or fires have been reported so far, the potential risk of accidents and injuries is a concern.

Previous Ford Recalls for Similar Issues
  • 2016: Ford recalled 153,000 F-150 trucks from the 2011-2012 model years for similar transmission downshifts.
  • 2019: The recall expanded to include 1.48 million trucks from the 2013 model year.
  • 2024: Ford recalled 668,000 F-150 trucks from the 2014 model year due to the same problem.
Next Steps

NHTSA will evaluate the severity and safety risks of the transmission issue in 2015-2017 models. If necessary, this could lead to another recall.

Owners of affected vehicles should stay updated on the investigation and await further guidance from Ford or NHTSA.
