Visit Follows Deadly Missile Strike in Sumy
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on Tuesday, standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The visit came just days after a Russian missile strike on the northern city of Sumy killed 35 people and injured more than 100.
Statement of Solidarity
Rutte emphasized that NATO’s backing of Ukraine remains firm. He referenced the recent attack in Sumy, calling it a tragedy for the Ukrainian people.
“Ukraine’s people have endured so much — not least Russia’s Palm Sunday attack on Sumy. NATO support is unwavering,” he stated.
He further affirmed NATO’s ongoing commitment to help Ukraine defend itself and to deter future aggression, aiming for a just and lasting peace.
Hospital Visit and Honors for Ukrainian Soldiers
During the trip, Rutte and Zelenskiy visited a hospital where wounded Ukrainian soldiers are receiving treatment. Zelenskiy spoke with recovering soldiers and awarded honors to both fighters and combat medics.
“We spoke with our warriors. I presented state awards to our defenders. I am grateful to our guys for their strength, resilience, and for protecting our people,” Zelenskiy said.
He also extended thanks to all those who are defending, healing, enduring, and supporting the nation.
