Curfew Enforced Following Clashes

Authorities have imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Nagpur after violent clashes erupted over a Hindu group’s demand for the removal of the tomb of a 17th-century Mughal ruler. The unrest led to injuries among police officers and damage to multiple vehicles.

Police Officers and Civilians Injured

At least 15 police personnel were injured in the violence, with one in serious condition. Several civilians were also hurt. A police officer, speaking anonymously, confirmed the escalation of violence in the central Indian city.

Government’s Response

Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, condemned the violence and directed law enforcement to take strict action. In a video message, he emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order.

Protests and Slogans

Members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) burned an effigy of Emperor Aurangzeb and his tomb while chanting slogans demanding its removal from Aurangabad. The group advocates replacing the tomb with a memorial dedicated to local Maratha rulers.

Escalation and Stone Pelting

The situation intensified when members of Muslim groups marched near a police station, throwing stones at police personnel. Witnesses reported that attackers, wearing masks, carried sharp weapons and bottles.

VHP Denies Involvement in Violence

VHP leaders denied accusations of inciting violence. Milind Parande, the group’s general secretary, stated that their objective is to honor Maratha rulers and not to provoke unrest.

Political and Historical Context

Nagpur is the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ongoing controversy over historical figures like Aurangzeb reflects broader tensions over India’s past and identity.

Accusations Against Modi Government

Critics have accused Prime Minister Modi of discrimination against Muslims and failing to take action against those targeting them. The government has denied these allegations, maintaining its stance on upholding law and order.
