Iceland’s Historic Government Appointment

Iceland’s president appointed a new government on December 16, marking a historic moment in the country’s political landscape. Kristrun Frostadottir, leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, was named the new prime minister.

A Historic Coalition

The new government will be a coalition consisting of the Social Democratic Alliance, the centrist People’s Party, and the left-leaning, pro-European Reform Party. This shift comes after Frostadottir’s party emerged as the largest in the snap election held on November 30.

Women in Power

This marks the first time in Iceland’s history that the leaders of all governing parties will be women. Additionally, Iceland will now have both a female prime minister and a female president, Halla Tomasdottir, simultaneously.

Frostadottir Makes History

At 36, Kristrun Frostadottir becomes the youngest prime minister in Iceland’s history. Her appointment brings a new era of leadership, replacing the previous government led by Bjarni Benediktsson’s conservative Independence Party, along with the Left Green Movement and the Progressive Party.
