Two Men Arrested After Refusing to Leave Stadium

Authorities will tighten security at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) following a serious breach during an Australian Rules football match on Thursday night. Two men brought firearms into the stadium during a high-attendance game between Collingwood and Carlton, which drew a crowd of 82,058.

Police said the two men, aged 21 and 27, were found carrying guns after they refused to leave the venue due to their behavior in the stands. They were arrested and charged with firearms possession and other offences.

Screening Failure Triggers Safety Review

According to officials, the stadium’s screening units did detect the firearms when the men entered, but a proper follow-up manual search was not conducted.

MCG CEO Stuart Fox described the breach as “disappointing” and announced increased security measures moving forward.

“We will be increasing the extensiveness of the secondary manual security process, and patrons may experience slight delays as they attend upcoming events,” Fox said.

He added that MCG management will continue working closely with Victoria Police, the AFL, and their security partners.

AFL Responds: Lifetime Bans Issued

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon also expressed his dismay over the incident.

“More than 1.2 million fans have attended the football so far this season, and we will work closely with authorities to ensure the matches and venues continue to be a safe and welcoming place for all,” he said.

Dillon confirmed that the two men involved will be issued lifetime bans from all AFL matches.

Offenders Were on Bail at Time of Arrest

Police revealed that both individuals were already on bail for unrelated matters. They remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.
