Greenland Pro-Business Party Wins Election, Shifting Political Landscape

Election Results Signal a Shift Toward Business and Mining

Greenland’s Demokraatit Party surged to victory in a political shake-up that could boost efforts to expand the island’s mining industry. The party, which supports gradual independence from Denmark, won 10 seats in the 31-seat Inatsisartut parliament—more than tripling its previous count.

The pro-independence Naleraq Party also made gains, doubling its seats to eight. Meanwhile, the ruling coalition lost nearly half of its share of the vote.

“People want change,” said Demokraatit leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen after the final vote count. “We don’t want independence tomorrow; we want to build a good foundation.”

Independence at the Heart of the Election

The election was largely defined by the debate over Greenland’s independence, especially following discussions about the island’s strategic importance to the United States. Although the Demokraatit Party opposed outright U.S. acquisition of Greenland, they expressed willingness to engage in commercial dialogue.

Greenland, which is three times the size of Texas but home to just 57,000 people, contains valuable mineral resources, including rare earth minerals crucial for high-tech industries.

Despite strong support for independence, experts believe the Demokraatit Party is more likely to form a coalition with the outgoing ruling parties, Inuit Ataqatigiit and Siumut, rather than pushing for immediate secession.

Potential Implications for U.S. Interests

While the Demokraatit Party dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland as a “threat to political independence,” their pro-business policies may benefit U.S. interests.

“If you look at the election results, voters were motivated by business development and independence,” said Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, a political science professor at the University of Copenhagen. “From a U.S. perspective, this is an optimal outcome.”

Washington is particularly interested in securing Greenland’s mineral wealth while preventing Chinese and Russian influence in the region. If an agreement is reached to limit foreign control over Greenland’s resources, the U.S. could gain strategic access to critical materials.

Denmark’s Response to the Election

Greenland has been a part of Denmark since 1953 and gained autonomy in 1979. Although Denmark still controls foreign affairs, defense, and monetary policy, Greenland has the right to seek full independence through a referendum, a step it has not yet taken due to economic concerns.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen congratulated the Demokraatit Party, while Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Greenland and Denmark.

Economic and Industry Priorities

Historically, election campaigns in Greenland have focused on how to allocate funds from Denmark, which account for nearly half of Greenland’s budget. Fishing remains the dominant industry, making up 95% of exports.

The Demokraatit Party aims to diversify Greenland’s economy by reducing bureaucratic obstacles and encouraging private sector growth, particularly in mining.

The party also opposed the 2021 uranium mining ban, which halted the development of Kvanefjeld, one of the world’s largest rare earth deposits. Their stance on resource extraction could shape Greenland’s economic future and its international partnerships.

Voter Turnout and Next Steps

Tuesday’s election saw a 70.9% voter turnout, a 5% increase from the previous election. The ruling Inuit Ataqatigiit party lost four of its 11 seats, while its coalition partner, the social-democratic Siumut party, dropped from 10 seats to four.

As coalition talks begin, Greenland’s political landscape is shifting toward economic development and strategic international partnerships.
