Greece Warns of Seismic Activity Near Santorini
Recent Earthquakes in the Region
A series of tremors, with magnitudes up to 4.3, were recorded between Friday and Saturday in the area between Santorini and Amorgos. Subsequent earthquakes, ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 in magnitude, occurred on Sunday morning. No significant damage has been reported.
Authorities Issue Precautionary Measures
The civil protection ministry has stated that the seismic activity is not linked to volcanic activity and is currently receding. However, experts have recommended several precautionary measures:
- Closure of schools on Monday, February 3
- Avoidance of the small port of Ammoudi and the harbor of Fira
- Refraining from gathering in indoor spaces
Seismic Activity and Santorini’s History
Greece is located on multiple fault lines and frequently experiences earthquakes. Santorini, a well-known tourist destination, was shaped by one of the largest volcanic eruptions around 1600 BC. The last eruption in the area occurred in 1950.
