French Fugitive ‘The Fly’ Arrested in Romania

Nine-Month Manhunt Ends in Capture

Mohamed Amra, a French fugitive known as “The Fly,” was arrested in Romania on February 22, 2025. His escape in May 2024 led to a massive international manhunt, culminating in his capture with the cooperation of Romanian authorities.

Deadly Escape in Normandy

On May 14, 2024, armed assailants ambushed a prison convoy transporting Amra near the Incarville tollbooth. The attackers used automatic rifles, killing two prison guards and injuring three others. This was the first fatal attack on French prison officers since 1992.

Amra, 30, is originally from Rouen, Normandy, and has a long history of criminal activity. He has been convicted 13 times for offenses such as robbery, extortion, and armed violence. Authorities also suspect him of leading a drug trafficking network with connections to organized crime in Marseille.

International Manhunt and Capture

Following his escape, French authorities launched an extensive search involving over 450 officers. Interpol issued a red notice, and the hunt extended beyond France’s borders. After months on the run, Amra was finally arrested in Romania, marking the end of an intense pursuit.

Implications for Law Enforcement

Amra’s case underscores the challenges France faces in combating organized crime and securing high-risk prisoners. His capture highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling cross-border criminal activities.
