European Commission to Conduct Stress Test on Social Media Giants Ahead of German Election
The European Commission has invited major social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, X, and others, to participate in a “stress test” to assess their efforts to combat disinformation ahead of Germany’s national election. The test is scheduled for January 31, and platforms will be scrutinized to ensure compliance with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
Stress Test Details
The January 31 test will simulate scenarios in which the DSA would apply, allowing the Commission to evaluate how platforms handle specific risks associated with their services. This is the first time such a test will be conducted specifically for a national election, following a similar exercise before the European Parliament elections last year.
Platform Participation
Companies such as Microsoft, TikTok, LinkedIn, Google, Snap, Meta (Facebook), and X have been asked to take part in the test. Senior compliance officers and other DSA specialists from these companies will attend the meeting, where they will demonstrate their preparedness to address disinformation threats on their platforms.

The stress test is part of the EU’s broader effort to protect the integrity of elections within its member states. By ensuring that social media platforms have sufficient safeguards in place, the Commission aims to minimize the spread of false information that could undermine public trust and interfere with the democratic process.
