Europe Largest EV Charging Network Announced
Major Charging Firms Join Forces
Four of Europe’s largest electric vehicle charging companies—Atlante (Italy), Ionity (Germany), Fastned (Netherlands), and Electra (France)—have formed an alliance called Spark. This partnership aims to create the continent’s largest public charging network.
Expanding Access Across Europe
The network will include 11,000 charging points and 1,700 charging stations across 25 European countries. Starting in June, EV users will be able to access any of these stations and pay through any Spark Alliance member app.
Ultra-Fast Charging Capability
The new network will support ultra-fast charging up to 400 kW, making long-distance EV travel more convenient.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has been pushing for faster expansion of charging infrastructure to ease consumer concerns and boost EV demand.
EU’s Ambitious Charging Goals
The European Commission estimates that 3.5 million charging points are needed by 2030. This requires the installation of approximately 410,000 public chargers per year—nearly three times the current rate.
Industry Outlook
Fastned CEO Michiel Langezaal emphasized the importance of policy stability in supporting the industry’s growth. While private investments like Spark are a step forward, achieving EU targets may require additional government action.
