Australia Accelerates $1 Billion in Defense Spending
Largest Military Budget Increase Since WWII
Australia is bringing forward A$1 billion in defense spending in its upcoming federal budget to enhance military capability. This is part of a broader A$10.6 billion increase over four years, contributing to a decade-long A$50 billion defense boost—the most significant since World War II.
Key Defense Initiatives
Submarine Rotational Force West
Preparations at HMAS Stirling and the Henderson Defence Precinct in Western Australia will support the rotation of up to four U.S. and one U.K. nuclear-powered submarines starting in 2027.
Guided Weapons and Explosives Enterprise
Australia is establishing domestic manufacturing capabilities for guided weapons. The production of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) will begin within the country this year.
Frigate Program
The government is accelerating the acquisition of a new frigate into the service fleet within this decade.
Additional Military Upgrades
Australia has received the first two of 42 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) launcher vehicles ordered from Lockheed Martin, enhancing its long-range strike capabilities.
These developments reflect Australia’s commitment to strengthening its defense posture amid evolving global security dynamics.
