Summary Executions of Children Confirmed

The United Nations has reported severe human rights violations by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a tragic incident, three children were summarily executed by M23 fighters in Bukavu after they donned weapons and uniforms abandoned by the Congolese army.

UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani confirmed these executions and expressed deep concern for the safety of journalists, human rights defenders, and civil society members facing potential reprisals from M23.

Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis

The M23 rebels have long been active in eastern DRC and have been implicated in numerous atrocities, including attacks on hospitals and aid warehouses. Their recent capture of Bukavu, a city of 1.3 million people, has worsened the humanitarian situation.

The ongoing conflict has led to the deaths of at least 3,000 people and the displacement of thousands more. Approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops are reported to be supporting M23 as the group seeks control over the mineral-rich areas of eastern Congo.

Surge in Sexual Violence

The violence has also led to a disturbing rise in sexual assaults. UNICEF reports that between January 27 and February 2, there were 572 rape cases, including 170 involving children. These assaults were carried out by armed groups amid the ongoing conflict between M23 rebels and government forces.

Calls for Action

The international community continues to call for an end to hostilities and for the protection of civilians in the affected regions. Human rights organizations are urging immediate intervention to prevent further atrocities and ensure the safety of those at risk.
