Washington Requests European Contributions

The United States has reached out to European capitals to assess their potential security commitments for Ukraine, according to Finland’s President Alexander Stubb. This comes amid intensified diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Four European sources confirmed that Washington had distributed a document requesting details on possible future troop contributions. Two sources stated that the request was sent earlier in the week.

Finnish President Confirms Inquiry

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Stubb stated, “The Americans have provided Europeans with the questionnaire on what would be possible.” He added that this initiative would prompt European nations to deliberate on their roles, whether they respond individually or collectively.

The Financial Times first reported that the U.S. request included inquiries about military aid, peacekeeping forces, and broader security arrangements that European nations could offer to Ukraine.

Framework for Negotiations

A European diplomat familiar with the document described its purpose: “The idea is evidently to see how European allies see the possible framework for negotiations to put an end to the conflict, and the possible engagement of Europe and the United States.”

The document reportedly contains six key questions, with one specifically directed at European Union member states.

Zelenskiy Calls for a European Army

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the formation of a European army, emphasizing that Europe could no longer rely on U.S. protection. He argued that a strong European military presence would command greater respect from Washington.

Trump’s Recent Discussions with Putin

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that negotiations to end the war should commence immediately. This has heightened concerns in Kyiv and European capitals about the necessity of securing alternative defense guarantees should U.S. support wane.

European Response and Future Commitments

A European diplomat indicated that Washington is actively questioning European nations about their willingness to deploy troops. “The Americans are approaching European capitals and asking how many soldiers they are ready to deploy,” the diplomat said.

The U.S. State Department has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this request.
