Britain’s Foreign Minister David Lammy met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in London to discuss key bilateral and international issues. The meeting marks the revival of the UK-China Strategic Dialogue, last held in 2018. The visit is seen as an effort to normalize relations following years of diplomatic tensions.

Focus Areas of Discussion

Lammy outlined a broad agenda for the talks, including economic cooperation, UK national security, and areas where the two countries have differing perspectives. “We will also discuss issues where the UK and China do not always see eye-to-eye, and in some cases, the UK does have significant concerns,” Lammy stated before the media was ushered out of the room. A formal British readout of the full meeting is expected later.

Security and Geopolitical Issues

Earlier in the week, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that discussions would cover international security and the war in Ukraine. These topics remain crucial in shaping UK-China relations.

New Government’s Approach to China

The Labour government, in power since July, has prioritized improving ties with China as a key foreign policy goal. This marks a shift from previous Conservative administrations, under which relations reached their lowest point in decades. The renewed dialogue aims to foster cooperation while addressing outstanding disagreements.
