Chiara Ferragni to Face Trial for Alleged Fraud in Charity Sales
Milan Prosecutors Send Influencer to Trial
Italian fashion influencer Chiara Ferragni has been sent to trial over fraud charges related to allegedly misleading charity claims linked to the sales of Christmas cakes and Easter eggs. The trial is set to begin on September 23 in Milan. Under Italian law, fraud cases can go directly to trial without a preliminary hearing.
Ferragni’s Response to the Charges
Ferragni, 37, has denied any wrongdoing, calling the accusations “deeply unfair.” She stated that a trial was unnecessary to prove that she “never cheated anyone.” If convicted, she could face a prison sentence of one to five years.
Background of the Case
Ferragni, who has nearly 29 million Instagram followers, was fined €1.1 million ($1.14 million) in 2023 by Italy’s competition authority (AGCM) for misleading consumers with Ferragni-branded Pandoro Christmas cakes. The packaging allegedly gave the impression that purchases would contribute to the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital.
In a separate case, she agreed to pay at least €1.2 million to a children’s charity after controversy over Ferragni-branded Easter eggs, which misled buyers into thinking they were supporting the “I Bambini delle Fate” charity.
Legal Defense
Ferragni’s lawyers argue that the matter “has no criminal relevance” and had already been resolved with AGCM. However, prosecutors proceeded with fraud charges, citing the alleged deception of consumers.
Impact on Ferragni’s Career
Following the controversy, Ferragni faced negative publicity and canceled brand partnerships. In December 2023, she admitted to a “communications error”. The Italian government responded by tightening rules on charity giving to prevent similar incidents in the future.
