Trump Suggests Jordan and Egypt Take More Palestinians from Gaza
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Jordan and Egypt should accept more Palestinians from Gaza, where ongoing conflict has caused a severe humanitarian crisis and significant loss of life.
“Could Be Temporary or Long-Term”
When asked whether this relocation would be temporary or permanent, Trump responded, “Could be either.”
Although the U.S. previously expressed opposition to the forcible displacement of Palestinians, the current situation in Gaza has raised global concern. Rights groups and humanitarian agencies have warned about mass displacement, a worsening hunger crisis, and the dire living conditions faced by Gaza’s population.
U.S. Criticism Over Support for Israel
The U.S. has faced international criticism for its support of Israel amidst allegations of war crimes in Gaza. Despite this, Washington has continued to back its ally, framing its assistance as essential to countering Iran-backed militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
Calls for Regional Cooperation
Trump revealed he had urged Jordan’s King Abdullah to accept more Palestinian refugees. He stated, “I’d love you to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza strip right now, and it’s a mess. I’d like him to take people.”
He also plans to discuss the matter with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, saying, “I’d like Egypt to take people. You’re talking about a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing.”
Gaza’s Humanitarian Catastrophe
Before the conflict began, Gaza had a population of approximately 2.3 million. The region is now described as a “demolition site” due to extensive destruction from Israeli military operations.
Trump stated, “It’s literally a demolition site, almost everything is demolished, and people are dying there. I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change.”
Origins of the Current Conflict
The latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking approximately 250 hostages.
Israel’s military response has resulted in over 47,000 deaths in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. This has led to accusations of genocide and war crimes against Israel, which the Israeli government denies.
Ceasefire Brings Limited Relief
A ceasefire, implemented a week ago, has provided a brief pause in hostilities. It has also facilitated the release of some Israeli hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
